Why practice an ancient, traditional weapon in this contemporary society?

In brief:

The origin of the weapon was for use in defense and in war, to kill the enemy.

In modern times, the use of the weapon, especially the sword, serves a completely different purpose.

Ideally, the principle behind the practice and study of the sword - the katana or the jian, embodies the value and spirit of a culture, to help in the development of personality and character. Supposedly, the higher the skill the finer one's character must be. Both of these sword techniques have been developed over time by many dedicated masters to a very high level. Both of the swords are held in high esteem and therefore demand much respect.

Constant and diligent study and practice will help in the understanding of the empty hand techniques. It also helps to improve the footwork and the fluidity of movement and body placement. It promotes chi by directing the chi smoothly through the body to the tip of the sword.

The proper hold and strike or cut when practiced properly, daily, helps to refine the techniques and hopefully understand the principle of the art.

The sword is also an instrument of meditation and a symbol of moral uprightness and selflessness.

Paying special attention during practice, due to the nature of the sword, helps to develop general awareness, inner calm and correctness.

In the execution of techniques, the movement must be beautiful and natural. It is difficult to master either sword but is possible through diligent practice to move one step at a time to reach it.
